Change happens

At The Writing Company’s headquarters, the Associated Press Stylebook has a special place on our bookshelf. We have several versions. Our most recent is from 2015.

We like noticing the AP Stylebook’s subtle changes from year to year. These days, “they” is allowed as a singular pronoun (great change!) and “over” can be used interchangeably with “more than” when referring to numerical values (heresy!).

We all tend to hold tight to the rules we know, especially when it comes to grammar. In a chaotic world, it’s comforting to feel unambiguously right about something. But like so much else, language is organic and evolving—and grammar rules need to keep pace.

It’s hard to change entrenched habits, of course. But adapting to new ways of describing the world is critical if you want to stay connected to your audience.

Speaking of staying connected and embracing change, we recently launched a brand-new website. Our site has a whole new look, expanded info about our team and, for the first time, stories about what we do and how we do it. Check it out, then drop us a line and let us know what you think. (And, yes, we’ve already ordered a new AP Stylebook for the office.)
