OUR MODEL

The Writing Company is a community of friends and colleagues who choose to work together to create content for clients. We draw on that community to build teams for jobs that range from one-off magazine articles to large-scale projects that involve dozens of writers.

Flexibility is at the heart of our model. Flexibility means less stress for clients and for us. Our clients know that we can put together and manage a team of writers and editors on short notice, and make changes to accommodate even the craziest shifts in schedule and scope. Our writers know that when things get crazy we can get them the help they need to finish or oversee a project.

Writing is at the heart of our model. We come from traditional editorial backgrounds, with serious writing and editing experience. Between us, we’ve written for scores of the most respected national publications and published dozens of books, including a few bestsellers. As a result, we can play a key role in helping clients make judgments about editorial direction.

Friendship and community are at the heart of our model. We work with people (writers, editors, clients) we like and respect. It’s more fun, and things go more smoothly that way—in fact, everyone saves money.

Teaching and learning are at the heart of our model. Many of our core contributors began their careers working in some version of our apprentice program, which mentors young writers. More experienced  people are encouraged to take on new roles over time, so that learning continues as their skill sets mature.

Efficiency is at the heart of the model. We can make your life easier and cut your costs. Rather than find five or six writers to provide content for a magazine, your editor can make a single call and we’ll build and run the team, editing their work before you see it. And yet our rates for writing and editing that work are typically equal to what you’d pay a solo freelancer. We can do this in part because we are fast, and also because we are extremely careful about assigning people (apprentices, reporters, writers, editors, project managers) to the right roles (we don’t pay one of our top guns to chase down facts and figures on the Internet).
